13-year-old Kiki moves to a seaside town with her talking cat, Jiji, to spend a year alone, in accordance with her village's tradition for witches in training. After learning to control her broomstick, Kiki sets up a flying courier service and soon becomes a fixture in the community. But when the insecure young witch begins questioning herself and loses her magic abilities, she must overcome her self-doubt to get her powers back.
The highest grossing film in Japan in 1989, Kiki's Delivery Service won many film accolades including Anime Grand Prix awards for Best Anime, Best Female Character, and Best Anime Theme Song.
In September of 1998, when the video came to the U.S., Roger Ebert ranked it as one of the best animated films released that year. Siskel and Ebert reviewed the video release of the film as a regular feature film, for the first time ever, instead of including it in their video pick of the week section. They gave it "two thumbs up"!
